Project Proposal

KNEIA is seeking a project coordinator and partners to participate in the FARMBIRD project to identify the drivers behind the rapid and still insufficiently understood declines of Europe’s farmland birds, while simultaneously developing the evidence-based, scalable solutions needed to halt and ultimately reverse these trends.

TOPIC: “HORIZON-CL6-2026-01-BIODIV-02-two-stage: Open topic: Uncovering the causes of specific species’ rapid decline and exploring actionable solutions” indicates: “As a result of unsustainable human activities, the global population of wild species is estimated to have fallen by more than 70% over the last 50 years. (…) Proposals should support the implementation of the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030, and particularly target 4: “by 2030, significant areas of degraded and carbon-rich ecosystems are restored (…)”. Successful proposals should: 1) assess and improve the understanding of the drivers of decline of common or widespread species (…). 2) develop and test innovative approaches and actionable solutions to address the decline. 3) develop plans to support future uptake and upscaling after the research project and assess how tools, methods and solutions can be adapted and applied across different regions and contexts. 4) consider the need for long-term ecological monitoring of the selected species populations and associated habitats (…). 5) if relevant, provide policy recommendations”.

The outcomes of the project will contribute to halting and reversing the ongoing decline of Europe’s farmland bird populations by delivering robust scientific evidence, validated conservation solutions, and operational pathways that directly support the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the Nature Restoration Law, and the Global Biodiversity Framework targets.
