Project Proposal
Seeking international collaborators for upcoming IHI CALL 12
Can act as:
Seeking expertise:
Join the Consortium for IHI Call 12
Main call objectives: Boosting innovation for a competitive European health ecosystem.
Topic 2 (SO2): integrate fragmented health research and innovation efforts bringing together health industry sectors and other stakeholders, focussing on unmet public health needs, to enable the development of tools, data, platforms, technologies and processes for improved prediction, prevention, interception, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases, meeting the needs of end-users.
Project:
Integrated Translational Platform for Nutritional Rehabilitation and Microbiota-Based Recovery after Colorectal Surgery (INTRAMIC). Bridging clinical nutrition, microbiome science and industrial innovation to improve intestinal recovery and post-surgical outcomes.
The INTRAMIC project aims to integrate fragmented clinical, nutritional, and industrial research efforts to develop a new class of Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) designed to promote intestinal recovery and microbiota balance in patients undergoing colorectal surgery.
By combining clinical data, advanced microbiota profiling, and multi-omics analysis (including genomics, metabolomics, and proteomics), the INTRAMIC consortium will establish a translational platform to design and validate microbiota-targeted Foods for Special Medical Purposes (FSMPs) that actively modulate intestinal recovery after colorectal surgery.
The project will not only identify the optimal microbiota and metabolic signatures associated with functional intestinal adaptation but also investigate the immunological and oncological responses that determine long-term patient outcomes.
Ultimately, INTRAMIC seeks to improve the quality of life and post-surgical recovery of patients by enabling personalized nutritional interventions that restore intestinal balance, reduce chronic complications, and enhance overall well-being.
Through this integrated clinical, biological, and industrial approach, the project directly addresses an unmet public health need, paving the way for predictive and preventive strategies in intestinal rehabilitation.

Expected Partners and Collaboration Opportunities:
We are currently seeking partners across Europe with complementary expertise to join the consortium. In particular:
· Clinical research partners (hospitals, clinical research organizations, university hospitals) experienced in nutritional trials, microbiota studies, and colorectal rehabilitation.
· Industrial and CDMO partners for the formulation, sterilization, and packaging of medical nutrition products (liquid or gel formats, FSMP-certified production).
· Industrial pharmaceutical partners for regulatory, dissemination, and patient-engagement experts to ensure compliance, stakeholder co-design, and effective translation of results into healthcare practice.
· Academic or SME partners specialized in gut microbiota, biomarkers, or bioinformatics for integration of multi-omics data.
· Digital health or AI partners to develop data platforms, predictive models, or decision-support tools for patient monitoring and outcome prediction.
Consortium Goals
· Develop a microbiota-targeted FSMP to improve intestinal and defecatory rehabilitation after surgery (clinically validated).
· Create a European translational platform linking public health institutions, R&D centres, industry in medical nutrition and patient associations.
· Generate real-world evidence (RWE) and data tools for personalized nutritional therapy in colorectal and gastrointestinal disorders.
· Establish a sustainable innovation ecosystem for future FSMP development and industrial scalability in the EU.
