Research Group Expertise:
We are responsible for the Nephrology Department at the Hospital Universitario Virgen de las Nieves in Granada.
Dr. María José Espigares is the Head of the Department, with extensive experience in home-based renal replacement therapies and joint responsibility for the Cardiorenal Unit in collaboration with the Cardiology Department. Her research activity has focused on the cardiorenal field, dialysis, and chronic kidney disease.
Dr. María José Torres is the Head of the Renal Transplant Unit, with expertise in renal patients at high cardiovascular risk and in diabetic kidney disease. Her research work includes studies in renal transplantation, vascular risk, chronic kidney disease, and its progression. She has also participated in projects aimed at the evaluation of different biomarkers and renal urinary exomes.
The Nephrology Department has extensive experience in conducting clinical trials involving renal transplant recipients, patients with chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, hereditary kidney disorders, glomerulonephritis, cardiorenal patients, individuals with advanced kidney disease, and patients undergoing dialysis.
The department has produced publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals, has participated as speakers at regional and national congresses, and has presented scientific communications at conferences across different medical fields.
Our aim is to collaborate with other international centers on projects related to nephrology, cardionephrology, renal transplantation, and patients with other cardiovascular conditions.
Possible Involvement in the project:
We have access to a broad and diverse patient population. We currently provide follow-up for more than 1,000 renal transplant recipients with multiple comorbidities, including cardiovascular complications, infections, and malignancies. Additionally, we follow more than 3,000 outpatients with varying stages of kidney disease, including diabetic kidney disease, high vascular risk conditions, associations with oncological and oncohematological diseases, hereditary disorders such as polycystic kidney disease, glomerular kidney diseases, and advanced kidney disease.
We also have access to hospitalized patients with different degrees of renal failure, as well as patients undergoing hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and home hemodialysis.
Our patients are aged over 14 years and present a high level of clinical complexity. This population includes vulnerable patients, individuals with obesity, hypertension, diabetes, lipid abnormalities, cardiovascular disease, a predisposition to infections, malignancies, and cardiac conditions.
